Selective Mutism 101
Understanding SM in the Educational Setting
This interactive course is intended to help school teams to deepen their understanding of the needs of students with selective mutism. Attendees will gain a greater understanding of what SM is and what it isn’t, grow in their awareness of the inner experience of a student who has SM, and develop an increased understanding of the components of an integrated school-based team approach for supporting this population. Disability awareness specific to SM will also be explored.
Selective Mutism 102
Treating SM in the Educational Setting
This interactive course will help school teams to effectively treat a variety of children, adolescents, and young adults with selective mutism (SM) using an integrated team approach and evidence-based practice. Participants are given an overview of the different treatment approaches to SM, strategies for identifying therapeutic targets, guided practice for intervention, and techniques for supporting individuals who are clinically severe. The ways in which school supports and private supports work together simultaneously and synergistically are explored and the important roles of teachers and paraprofessionals are emphasized.

A little bit about me…
Hello! My name is Annie DiVello and I am a Speech-Language Pathologist specialized in the area of selective mutism.
I graduated from West Virginia University with a Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology. I had the opportunity to study under nationally renowned Dennis Ruscello Phd.,CCC-SLP during my time at WVU.
I have worked with individuals all across the country including New England, West Virginia, Atlanta, and South Central Los Angeles. I use an integrated approach and enjoy working closely with family members, school teams, and other service providers to create a collaborative model of support for the individuals I serve. Though I have worked with many populations, my particular area of clinical interest is selective mutism.
I am the Selective Mutism Association (SMA) State Coordinator for NH, MA, and ME and love working with people of all ages. I have experience working with children ages nine months – 18 years of age and with adults 20 -104 years of age. I am passionate about my field and about helping people to communicate. I feel that the ability to communicate is a beautiful gift and the foundation of human connection.
