Selective Mutism 101
Understanding SM in the Educational Setting

This interactive course is intended to help school teams to deepen their understanding of the needs of students with selective mutism. Attendees will gain a greater understanding of what SM is and what it isn’t, grow in their awareness of the inner experience of a student who has SM, and develop an increased understanding of the components of an integrated school-based team approach for supporting this population.  Disability awareness specific to SM will also be explored.

Selective Mutism 102
Treating SM in the Educational Setting

This interactive course will help school teams to effectively treat a variety of children, adolescents, and young adults with selective mutism (SM) using an integrated team approach and evidence-based practice. Participants are given an overview of the different treatment approaches to SM, strategies for identifying therapeutic targets, guided practice for intervention, and techniques for supporting individuals who are clinically severe.  The ways in which school supports and private supports work together simultaneously and synergistically are explored and the important roles of teachers and paraprofessionals are emphasized.

A little bit about me…

Annie DiVello - Owner of Annie DiVello Consulting

Hello! My name is Annie DiVello and I am a Speech-Language Pathologist specialized in the area of selective mutism.

I graduated from West Virginia University with a Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology. I had the opportunity to study under nationally renowned Dennis Ruscello Phd.,CCC-SLP during my time at WVU.

I have worked with individuals all across the country including New England, West Virginia, Atlanta, and South Central Los Angeles. I use an integrated approach and enjoy working closely with family members, school teams, and other service providers to create a collaborative model of support for the individuals I serve. Though I have worked with many populations, my particular area of clinical interest is selective mutism.

I am the Selective Mutism Association (SMA) State Coordinator for NH, MA, and ME and love working with people of all ages. I have experience working with children ages nine months – 18 years of age and with adults 20 -104 years of age. I am passionate about my field and about helping people to communicate. I feel that the ability to communicate is a beautiful gift and the foundation of human connection.

A few words from some of my attendees…

Awesome presenter, and presentation! Looking forward to the next series! It's crucial that we as educators build up awareness around SM in the school setting because these children need us to advocate for them in the early years. Many children are overlooked as either being shy or just being defiant and refusing to talk. It's also very overlooked because many times these students can and are able to do just the bare minimum to get by day to day but are truly struggling on the inside.

I totally appreciated your teaching style! A nice mix of discussion, videos and slides. I feel like I have a much better understanding of Selective Mutism. Will highly recommend your webinars to others!

I appreciate all the work you've put into these presentations, and found all of the information relevant to my career and needs. It's obvious you care deeply for the world of SM, and that made it encouraging to ask questions/have open discussions. Often times, it can be intimidating to approach someone who is as experienced as you are, but I found that wasn't the case at all. You're doing wonderful work!

Thank you so much for this informative series. Your knowledge base, video clips of treatment, and many examples were invaluable!

Thank you so very much. I am so grateful our paths have crossed and our District will be consulting with you to support my student and family. I very much look forward to collaborating with you and the other members on our Team. I am also looking forward to any and all future workshops you will be holding in the future.
